Progress on the Infamous “Sky” Painting, and a Shout Out

If you’ve read this blog before, you might remember the landscape I started where I couldn’t get the sky right, and I completely repainted the canvas several times before I was reasonably satisfied with it.  If you didn’t read the posts about that, you can catch up on it HERE.

I thought I should let everyone know that, NO, I didn’t toss that painting into the dumpster, though I wanted to several times.  Instead I kept working at it.  Here is the progress I’ve made so far, keep in mind that I took this photo with my cell phone, so the colors are not exactly accurate.  In the actual painting the sky has a lot of purple, and isn’t quite so dark.  Also there is a glare on the canvas that obscures the view of the closest end of the bridge, but you can still get a general idea of the direction this is going in.

Golden Gate in Progress

I need to darken the bridge a bit, so it will stand out against the bright sky, and I need to add more cables on the bridge.  Then, I’ll also add the street lights along the bridge.  I do have the basic elements of the painting all in place now.

Here I’d like to also give a shout out to a fellow blogger and artist.  Cindy Smith.  She is working a lot on her paintings, and on her blog as well.  Most recently, she enjoyed experimenting with Marbles and Paint, with some very lovely results.  You can see more of her art on her blog, at http://cindysmith939.blogspot.com/.

So, what do you think of my painting? I suppose its obvious by now that I’m painting the Golden Gate bridge.

  1. I love it love the colors
Thank you Vicki for the shout out

  2. I like to overall painting, but wonder if you dont have too many clouds in the sky. They look quite a bit like ocean waves as they are. I give you kudos on the painting, as I couldnt even begin to come close to this.

    • Mary, you may be right. But after what I went through to get the sky where I was reasonably happy with it, I won’t be changing it on this painting. However, it is because of the struggles with the sky in this painting that I have started practicing a sky once a week, so in future paintings I’ll hopefully see an improvement!

  3. It’s great that you didn’t give up and throw the painting in the garbage. Can’t wait to see the final product.

  4. That is stunning in my opinion! I agree you should darken the bridge but its lovely!

  5. I really like your painting. I don’t think you have to do another thing to it, it’s great just the way it is.

    • Cheryl, thank you. I do need to finish the bridge though, it should have cables running down, and the real bridge has streetlights along the length, that once I darken the rest of the bridge will look really nice against it.

What I’ve done here is put in the shape of the bridge in middle tones, then I need to add in darker areas for shadows and lighter areas for highlights.

  6. This is starting to become so lovely … please don’t give up! Painting takes courage, and your work is inspirational.
